Students across the Repton Family of Schools in the UAE are taking part in a new series of academic masterclasses designed to strengthen critical thinking, communication and independent learning skills before they reach university.

The Repton masterclasses connect pupils from Repton Dubai, Repton Al Barsha and Repton Abu Dhabi with specialist teachers from Repton School UK through live online sessions. The programme introduces students to discussion-led learning that mirrors the style of teaching often experienced in higher education. For parents and educators, the initiative highlights a growing focus on preparing students not only for examinations, but also for the academic expectations they will encounter at university and beyond.

How the Repton Masterclasses Prepare Students for Higher Education

Universities increasingly look for applicants who can think independently, communicate effectively and engage with complex ideas. As a result, many schools are exploring ways to develop these skills alongside academic achievement. The Repton masterclasses have been designed with this in mind.

Open to students in Years 10 to 12, the sessions encourage participants to analyse real-world issues, challenge assumptions and contribute confidently to discussions. Unlike traditional classroom lessons, the seminars are delivered in smaller groups and place greater emphasis on debate, collaboration and problem-solving.

Students are encouraged to engage directly with teachers and peers while exploring topics that extend beyond examination specifications. Launched as part of Repton’s enhanced online learning provision, the programme runs throughout the summer term and brings together students from across the school’s international community.

Repton masterclasses give UAE students a university-style learning experience

Michael Bloy, Principal, Repton Dubai said,

“This programme is a powerful example of the added value we offer our students. It goes beyond the classroom to provide rigorous academic stretch and direct access to Repton UK expertise, helping to prepare our students for the next stage of their educational journey.”

Exploring Real-World Challenges Through the Repton Masterclasses

A key feature of the programme is its focus on contemporary issues that students are likely to encounter during university study and future careers. Sessions cover subjects including geopolitics, economics, artificial intelligence and medical ethics.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to examine multiple perspectives and consider the wider implications of decisions and policies. In some masterclasses, participants take on the role of world leaders negotiating trade agreements or climate policies. In others, they work through ethical dilemmas similar to those used in university admissions interviews. Meanwhile, economics sessions require students to assess the impact of taxation, welfare and international trade decisions. Artificial intelligence is another major theme.

Students explore both the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies, helping them develop a balanced understanding of a subject that is reshaping industries worldwide. These activities provide opportunities for students to practise analytical thinking in realistic scenarios while strengthening their ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.

Building Confidence Alongside Academic Knowledge

Beyond subject-specific learning, the programme places significant emphasis on developing transferable skills. Debating, discussion and drama-based activities help students improve public speaking, teamwork and confidence. Moreover, regular participation in seminar-style learning encourages students to articulate their views, respond to opposing opinions and engage constructively in academic dialogue. These skills are becoming increasingly valuable as universities place greater emphasis on collaboration, presentations and independent research.

Dr Gavin Turner, Principal Deputy Head, Repton School UK commented,

“Our masterclasses are designed to challenge and inspire. By connecting students across our international community through live online learning, we are extending the Repton classroom beyond borders and nurturing the next generation of leaders and thinkers.”

Repton masterclasses help UAE students develop university-ready skills

Why university-ready skills matter for UAE students

The launch of the Repton masterclasses reflects a wider shift across international education towards preparing students for success beyond school. While strong examination results remain important, universities and employers increasingly value adaptability, resilience, communication and critical thinking. Therefore, programmes that expose students to university-style learning environments can provide valuable preparation before they begin higher education.

For students following GCSE, A Level and International Baccalaureate pathways, opportunities to engage with complex issues, defend arguments and collaborate with peers can help bridge the gap between school and university study. As schools continue to explore new approaches to teaching and learning, initiatives such as the Repton masterclasses demonstrate how technology can connect students with expertise beyond their local campus while supporting the development of essential future-ready skills.
