The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has announced that all government entities, departments, and institutions will observe a public holiday for the Islamic New Year. Official working hours will resume on Tuesday, June 16.
As the holiday falls on a Monday, employees who follow a Saturday and Sunday weekend will benefit from a three-day break. DGHR extended its best wishes to the UAE leadership, government and people, as well as to Arab and Islamic nations. The department also expressed hopes for the country’s continued prosperity, stability and progress.
UAE Federal Authorities Confirm Nationwide Holiday
The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation have also confirmed that Monday, June 15, 2026, will be an official public holiday for the Hijri New Year. This means that both federal government employees and private sector workers covered under the official holiday calendar will receive the day off.
Longer Break for Sharjah Employees
Government employees and school students in Sharjah, who follow a four-day working week with Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays off, will benefit from a four-day break when the Monday public holiday is added. This creates an extended weekend, giving residents additional time off to mark the occasion and spend time with family.
About the Islamic New Year
The Islamic, or Hijri, calendar is based on lunar months. The New Year begins on the first day of Muharram, which is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The Hijri New Year is observed across the Muslim world and is recognised as a significant date in the Islamic calendar, marking the start of a new lunar year.
