The UAE Ministry of Education has confirmed that students at all public and private nurseries, kindergartens, and schools will return to in-person learning from Monday, 20 April 2026, marking the end of an extended period of remote education introduced in response to regional security concerns.
The Ministry formally announced the resumption of in-person learning for all enrolled children, students, educational staff, and administrative staff across public and private nurseries, kindergartens, and schools, effective Monday, 20 April 2026.
The Shift to Remote Learning
Distance learning was first introduced on 2 March 2026 as a precautionary measure following regional instability linked to the US-Israel-Iran conflict. Originally scheduled to run until 6 March, the transition to online learning was extended in stages as authorities prioritised the safety of students, staff, and the broader education community. The spring break was also brought forward during this period.
Schools are now able to resume in-person operations following a ceasefire and a general stabilisation of the regional situation.
How Will the Return to School Take Place?
To support a safe and structured reopening, authorities are rolling out comprehensive preparedness programmes across nurseries, schools, and universities. These include staff training and operational readiness assessments aligned with official safety directives, field evaluation visits by education regulators and relevant ministries to verify on-the-ground preparedness, and clear guidance frameworks to enable schools to switch smoothly between in-person and remote learning when required.
In Dubai, school principals noted that institutions shared parent surveys to gauge readiness for the return, with responses largely positive and many families expressing strong support for resuming face-to-face learning.
Sharjah Leads Early Reopening Preparations
In Sharjah, preparations have been under way since 15 April. The Sharjah Private Education Authority confirmed that all administrative and teaching staff in private schools and nurseries were required to return to campus from Tuesday, 15 April, ahead of the wider student return.
This early staff mobilisation is aimed at ensuring full operational readiness, with a focus on mandatory training and emergency and crisis response protocols. Nurseries in Sharjah are set to welcome children back from Thursday, 17 April, ahead of the national return date.
What This Means for Parents and Students Across the UAE
The phased return signals a welcome return to normality for hundreds of thousands of students and families across the Emirates. Parents who have been managing home-based and online learning arrangements for over a month can expect schools to have completed safety checks and staff training before students walk back through the doors.
Education authorities have emphasised that guidance frameworks will remain in place to ensure schools can respond quickly should circumstances change, providing reassurance that continuity of learning will be maintained regardless of future developments.
