The UAE Award in Higher Education has been launched to celebrate outstanding universities, educators, researchers and industry partners across the country’s higher education sector. For parents, students, educators and education leaders, the new national award highlights the growing emphasis on academic quality, research excellence and stronger links between universities and industry as the UAE continues to strengthen its position as a global education destination.
Announced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR), the award is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council.
The inaugural awards programme will recognise excellence across universities, higher education institutions, vocational education providers, researchers and strategic partners that contribute to the country’s education and scientific research ambitions.
UAE Award in Higher Education Supports National Education Goals
Marking the launch, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan highlighted the central role of higher education in shaping the country’s future.
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan affirmed that investment in people remains the cornerstone of the UAE’s vision for the future and that higher education is among the key drivers of building a competitive, sustainable knowledge-based economy. His Highness stated that the UAE Award in Higher Education seeks to encourage transformative innovation in learning methodologies and scientific research, as the UAE continues to invest in developing academic institutions, empowering national talent and supporting high-quality scientific research in line with its vision of becoming a leading global hub for knowledge and innovation.
His Highness further noted that the UAE Award in Higher Education sends a clear message that the future is being shaped today within the country’s universities, research centres and institutes, and that knowledge and innovation form the foundation of sustainable progress. His Highness said,
“Building on this, we are committed to showcasing pioneering models that succeed in turning ideas into impact, theoretical learning into applied projects and scientific research into solutions that support the nation’s priorities and strengthen its global competitiveness.”
For students, the initiative reflects increasing opportunities to study in institutions recognised for excellence. Meanwhile, educators and university leaders gain a national platform to showcase innovation, strengthen partnerships and share best practice across the sector.
Four UAE Award in Higher Education Categories
The award covers four key areas that reflect the breadth of the UAE’s higher education landscape.
The Leading Universities and Higher and Vocational Education Institutions category celebrates universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions demonstrating outstanding academic leadership.
Meanwhile, the Transformative Higher Education Projects category recognises projects that help prepare the sector for future challenges while supporting sustainable development.
The Higher Education Pioneers category honours individuals making exceptional contributions to education, scientific research, entrepreneurship and global competitiveness.
Finally, the Influential Higher Education Partners category recognises leaders, strategic partners and international universities whose collaborations strengthen the UAE’s national higher education objectives. Together, these categories acknowledge excellence in teaching, research, innovation, collaboration and future readiness.
How the Award Will be Judged
MoHESR has developed an evaluation framework that focuses on measurable impact rather than individual initiatives alone.
Applications will be assessed against institutional performance, graduate outcomes, employability, project sustainability, economic and social impact, innovation and readiness for the future.
Additionally, judges will consider applied scientific research, partnerships with industry and the successful use of emerging technologies to address national priorities. This approach encourages institutions to demonstrate long term results that benefit students, employers and society.
What the Award Means for UAE Universities and Students
The award forms part of the UAE’s wider ambition to strengthen its higher education sector and support a knowledge-based economy.
Furthermore, it encourages stronger collaboration between universities and industry through scholarships, work experience opportunities and applied research. These partnerships can help students develop workplace skills while supporting innovation that addresses real world challenges.

Applications Now Open
The first cycle of the UAE Award in Higher Education is now underway.
Institutional applications will be accepted between July and September 2026. Evaluation and judging will follow before winners are announced during the fourth quarter of 2026.
