The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Emirates College for Advanced Education, has launched “Afaq: Empowering Educators with AI Technologies”, a specialised training programme involving around 500 teachers from across the UAE.

The initiative aims to prepare educators to integrate artificial intelligence into teaching, helping them create more innovative, personalised, and engaging learning experiences.

Equipping Teachers with AI Skills

The Afaq program combines theory with hands-on training to ensure teachers can apply AI tools effectively in classrooms. Participants learn to design educational content that adapts to students’ individual needs while improving assessment methods and classroom interaction.

The programme emphasises that AI is a supportive tool, not a replacement for teachers, allowing educators to focus on critical thinking, creativity, and future-ready skills in students.

Exploring the Fundamentals of AI

During the sessions, teachers gained practical experience using AI tools to personalise learning and enhance student engagement. The programme coincides with the UAE’s rollout of a new AI curriculum in public schools, highlighting the Ministry’s commitment to modernising teaching tools in line with global advancements.

Expert Insights on AI in Education

Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Ali, CEO of the TRENDS Research & Advisory Center, said:

“Technology is no longer merely a technical tool but a key driver of cultural change.”

He stressed the importance of initiatives like conscious content creation, content-quality monitoring platforms, and youth innovation awards that link technology with authentic learning. Dr Al Ali also highlighted projects including the TRENDS Hub Award for Scientific Research and the AI Community on WhatsApp, and proposed a Digital Knowledge Observatory to evaluate AI-generated content for originality and impact.

How AI Transforms Learning

AI is reshaping education by offering:

  • Personalised Learning: Tailored content adapts to each student’s pace and ability, providing instant feedback.
  • Teacher Support: Reduces administrative tasks, allowing educators to focus on teaching.
  • Student Data Analysis: Identifies students needing extra help for timely intervention.
  • Enhanced Educational Content: Supports interactive and immersive learning through AR and VR.
  • Support for Students with Special Needs: Assists learners with visual, hearing, or communication challenges.
  • Language Learning: Improves pronunciation and fluency using AI-powered tools.

Challenges of AI in Classrooms

The programme also addresses potential challenges:

  • Privacy and Security: Protecting student data and responsible AI use.
  • Overreliance on Technology: Ensuring human interaction remains central.
  • Training Requirements: Teachers and students need proper guidance to use AI effectively.

Preparing Future-Ready Educators

The Afaq initiative represents a major step towards future-ready education in the UAE. By empowering teachers with AI skills, the programme ensures classrooms are more innovative, personalised, and capable of preparing students for a rapidly evolving technological world.
