Where Will You Go To University?

Choosing your university destination is a life-defining decision that goes beyond your academic studies. Each country offers a unique combination of education systems, cultures, career opportunities, and lifestyles. This series by UniHawk explores the world’s leading university destinations, helping you to understand what it’s really like to live and study in some of the most popular countries for international students.

Why UAE Students Choose to Study in Australia

With its world-renowned universities, multicultural cities, and welcoming environment, Australia has become one of the top choices for international students across the globe. For students in the UAE considering studying overseas, Australia offers a high-quality, flexible education system and the potential for long-term career opportunities. Historically known for excellence in tourism and hospitality programs, Australia’s academic offering has broadened significantly to encompass a wide range of disciplines. Here are some of the opportunities and factors to consider if you are exploring universities in Australia.

Curriculum Style and Program Duration

Undergraduate degrees are usually three years in duration, enabling students to complete their studies earlier and more cost-effectively than in other destinations like the US and Canada. For high-performing students, some institutions offer dual programs combining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in five years. For aspiring medical students there are two routes: an integrated five-year program similar to the UK, or entry to medical studies following completion of an undergraduate program, which is more aligned with the US system and takes seven years to complete.

In addition to traditional university pathways, students may also consider TAFE (Technical and Further Education) or vocational programs. However, for international applicants, direct entry to a degree program remains the most widely recognized and recommended route.

Academic Reputation

Australia is home to a number of world-class institutions. The Group of Eight (Go8) is an alliance of the country’s leading universities, often compared to the Ivy League in the US or the Russell Group in the UK. These research-intensive universities maintain strong global rankings and offer high academic standards across disciplines.

Australia’s education system is well-aligned with international standards, ensuring a smooth transition for UAE students that are considering pursuing further study or postgraduate qualifications in the UK, US, or Europe.

Application Process and Entry Requirements for UAE Students Applying to Australia

One key factor for UAE students applying to Australian universities is the different academic calendar of the Southern Hemisphere. The academic year typically runs from February to December, meaning that application deadlines fall earlier, between June and August. Students need to make destination decisions with the different deadlines in mind, though it can also present an advantage for those who do not secure September admissions elsewhere or are reconsidering their study plans.

Entry into Australian universities is primarily grades-based, and there is also the requirement for language assessment scores such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.  Select programs such as Medicine and Dentistry have specific admission tests such as UCAT ANZ and IMAT. For entry into a Law degree, LAT is the standardized assessment test. For most other programs, an applicants’ school results from any curriculum are converted into an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) score, which universities use to assess eligibility.

Applications are submitted directly to each institution, and candidates are reviewed based on academic performance and may also have the opportunity to submit personal statements. In addition, as an international student, UAE applicants must submit a Genuine Student Statement, outlining their study intentions, and they may also need to demonstrate evidence of sufficient financial means to live and study in Australia.

Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Tuition fees for international students in Australia range from A$45,000 to A$60,000 per year, depending on the university and course. This makes Australia a more affordable option compared to some other popular destinations. Many universities offer academic scholarships ranging from A$5,000 to A$20,000 per year, which can help ease the financial burden and reward academic excellence.

Accommodation and Living Costs

Living expenses in Australia are estimated at A$20,000 to A$25,000 annually, covering accommodation, food, transport, and other essentials. Most universities recommend on-campus housing for international students, especially in the first year, as it offers an easy transition and helps build a strong sense of community. Private housing in nearby suburbs is also available in university cities.

Campus Life

Australia is an international education hub, with a diverse student demographic from across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, as well as the Middle East. Institutions offer extensive support through international student offices, orientation programs, and cultural societies.

Australian universities are also known for their global networks. They provide students with mobility opportunities, such as exchange programs and short-term international study trips, to help expand global exposure beyond Australia and explore other parts of the world.

Graduate Career Prospects

Australia has an active policy of encouraging skilled graduates to remain in the country and this is often a compelling reason for GCC students to consider the destination. The Post-Study Work Visa allows international students to remain in Australia for two to four years after completing their degrees, depending on the field of study and qualification level.

In-demand graduates, particularly in areas like healthcare, education, and technology, may be eligible for Permanent Residency (PR). While PR is assessed on a case-by-case basis, many students have successfully transitioned to residency quickly in sectors with talent shortages.
