At Brighton College Abu Dhabi, wellbeing is more than just a programme. It is a philosophy that underpins every aspect of school life.

We believe that true success comes not only from academic achievement but also from fostering emotional resilience, mental clarity, and physical health. Our approach ensures that pupils feel supported, empowered, and equipped with the tools they need to navigate challenges with confidence.

Wellbeing as a Schoolwide Philosophy

We integrate wellbeing into the foundation of education, making it an essential part of the learning experience rather than an additional initiative. From mindfulness sessions to structured emotional development programmes, pupils engage in activities that help them manage stress, develop self-awareness, and build meaningful relationships. The Zones of Regulation curriculum, introduced in our Pre-Prep School, is a key component of this approach. It teaches pupils to recognize and regulate their emotions, fostering a positive mindset and encouraging thoughtful interactions. The results have been transformative. Young learners now demonstrate heightened emotional intelligence, leading to smoother transitions into Prep school and a more engaged learning environment.

Empowering Pupils as Leaders

Beyond emotional wellbeing, we emphasise personal growth and leadership. Pupils actively shape their school environment through initiatives such as the Pupil Council, Play Leaders, Digital Leaders, and Eco Warriors. These roles are designed to instil a sense of responsibility and teamwork. Leadership opportunities help pupils develop confidence and agency, reinforcing the idea that wellbeing is a collective effort.

Our approach is evidence-based, informed by regular pupil wellbeing surveys and careful observation of engagement levels. These insights guide our initiatives, ensuring that pupils receive support tailored to their evolving needs. Importantly, our focus on wellbeing has led to higher attendance rates and improved pupil satisfaction, demonstrating the profound impact of a nurturing and supportive school environment.

Staff Wellbeing Matters Too

An essential part of a wellbeing culture is also ensuring that our staff community is cohesive and vibrant. We are currently establishing a Community Enhancement Group, with representatives from all areas of the school, whose remit is to construct a calendar of social events that our staff can participate in, such as yoga or golf days. These collaborative activities help to build relationships and strengthen the community, giving a sense of belonging to our staff. When our staff feel secure, valued and have positive wellbeing, they in turn perform better in the classroom and are able to empathise with our pupils more effectively. Developing wellbeing amongst our staff is an important end in itself, but it also positively impacts our pupils’ wellbeing.
