Known for uniting staff, parents, and students around a clear moral purpose, Roger is committed to ensuring every child achieves their full potential within a safe, caring, and family-centred school environment.
Education UAE recently sat down with Mr McDuff to discuss his leadership journey, educational values, and vision for schools in the UAE.
You’ve spent over 30 years in education. What keeps you motivated and what message would you like to share with our students and families as you begin your new journey?
I am driven by one enduring belief shaped over many years in education: every child has the potential to succeed, and it is our responsibility to help them discover what that success can look like. I measure success not only in academic achievement, but in the growth of character, values and integrity; in confidence, compassion and kindness; in sporting, cultural and creative pursuits; and in the ability to build strong friendships and contribute positively as responsible citizens.
To our students and families, my message is a simple one: be willing to step forward and have a go. Embrace opportunities, take thoughtful risks, and challenge yourselves with confidence. Growth comes from trying, learning, and persevering and I will always champion our students as they strive to become the very best versions of themselves.
What inspired you to join ICS, and what excites you most about leading this school community?
Having lived in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi for the past eight years, and worked in Abu Dhabi city for the last six, I have come to deeply value the unique character of its school communities. ICS has earned a strong reputation as a caring, family-centred and successful education group , and it was a genuine honour to be appointed as Al Danah’s new Principal.
I am inspired daily by the quality of our students, the dedication and professionalism of our staff, the excellent facilities, and the strong support of Mr Al Shamma, the CEO and the Director of Education, Dr Ziad. Together, we have an exceptional opportunity to build on these strengths. The potential for our school to grow, to soar, and to see our students flourish even further is immense, and I am truly excited about the journey ahead.
You’ve led schools across the UK and UAE. What values or principles do you believe create an outstanding school culture and how will you bring that to life here?
An outstanding school culture does not happen by chance. It is intentionally built through a clear set of shared values that shape how people treat one another, how learning is experienced, and what a community ultimately stands for. When these values are lived consistently and authentically, schools become places where both students and adults feel safe, valued, and inspired to thrive.
In my experience, the values that make the greatest difference are:
- Respect for every individual
- A deep commitment to learning
- Strong, trusting relationships
- High expectations balanced by high levels of support
- A genuine sense of belonging and community
- Integrity and ethical behaviour
- Student voice and agency
- Joy, pride, and celebration of success
Throughout my career, I have been unwavering in my commitment to these principles. I believe in leading by example and in setting high expectations, first of myself, and then of others. It is through this consistency, clarity, and care that values move beyond words and become lived realities across a school.
Parents want both strong academic outcomes and a caring environment. How do you balance high expectations with student wellbeing and personal development?
I firmly believe that strong academic outcomes and a genuinely caring environment are inseparable. Research consistently shows that high expectations, when paired with the right support, not only drive academic success but also have a powerful and positive impact on student wellbeing.
At ICS Al Danah, we will set ambitious expectations for every learner, while walking alongside students throughout their journeys supporting them when they need guidance, stepping in when they need reassurance, and challenging them when it is time to move forward. Combined with our externally recognised strength in pastoral care, this balanced approach ensures that our school is a place where students feel secure, supported, and inspired to achieve, and where parents can have complete confidence in their choice of school.
Today’s students need skills beyond the classroom. How do you plan to strengthen areas like innovation, leadership, and future-ready learning?
ICS already possesses both the facilities and the mindset required to foster innovation, leadership, and future-readiness. Through creativity embedded in academic learning, the breadth of opportunities offered within our co-curricular programme, and an outward-looking approach to modern developments, we are well placed to equip our students with the skills, confidence, and adaptability they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.
Even in my short time at the school, this commitment has been translated swiftly into action. We have introduced a financial literacy programme, enrolled students in the latest entrepreneurial initiative offered by the Abu Dhabi School of Management, and encouraged participation in the ISMOJO Future Careers (UAE) competition, all within the first week of term.
Our students are truly global citizens. Looking ahead, we will continue to strengthen the skills, mindsets, and opportunities that will serve them well both within school and far beyond it, ensuring they are prepared not only for the next stage of education, but for life.
Is there a key quote or experience as an educator you would like to share with us?
Sheikh Zayed, may he rest in peace, said
“The greatest investment that a nation can make is in its children and youth. They are the future of our country and the ones who will carry our legacy forward.”
It is an honour and a privilege to be part of that investment. It has been for the last 40 years of my career and I am delighted it is continuing at ICS.
