Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai has announced the launch of a significant new academic textbook designed to support the UAE’s long term sustainability and clean energy ambitions. The publication offers a practical and industry focused guide to integrating renewable energy sources into modern power grids.

Authored by Dr Abdalla Ismail Alzarooni, Professor of Electrical Engineering at RIT Dubai, in collaboration with Dr Haris M Khalid from the University of Dubai, the textbook is titled Advanced Grid Technologies: Grid Evolution, Smart Grid Fundamentals, and Renewable Energy Integration, Volume 1. The book is published by Elsevier and aligns closely with national priorities around innovation, sustainability and clean energy transition.

Addressing the evolution of modern power grids

As the global energy sector undergoes rapid transformation, electricity grids originally designed for centralised fossil fuel generation are now being required to accommodate renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, digital technologies and intelligent control systems. The textbook explores how these traditional grids are evolving into smarter, cleaner and more flexible systems.

The publication outlines the historical development of modern electricity grids before providing a comprehensive overview of renewable energy sources, the technical challenges they present and the fundamentals of smart grid adaptation. It focuses on the practical realities of integrating renewable energy into existing infrastructure while maintaining grid stability and reliability.

Supporting national sustainability strategies

Published by Elsevier, the textbook reflects a strong inter university collaboration between two Dubai based institutions. It directly supports the UAE Green Agenda 2030 and the We The UAE 2031 Vision by addressing real world energy challenges relevant to the region.

Through applied numerical analysis, worked examples and comparisons of recommended approaches, the text examines issues faced by utilities and infrastructure providers in the UAE, including DEWA, SEWA, ADWEA and the RTA. The region specific focus makes the publication particularly valuable for professionals working within the Gulf energy sector.

Preparing future engineers and decision makers

Speaking about the objectives of the textbook, Prof Alzarooni said,

“At RIT Dubai, we focus on education and research that directly contribute to national priorities and support our strong industry partnerships. This textbook explores solutions that will help to drive the UAE’s vision for sustainable power, renewable energy integration, artificial intelligence adoption, and smart infrastructure development, while also preparing the next generation of engineers and decision makers in the field.”

Key topics covered include energy storage systems, electric vehicles and vehicle to grid technologies, intelligent substations and demand forecasting. The textbook also examines the complexities of balancing supply and demand, managing data and ensuring reliable electricity delivery in increasingly decentralised power systems.

First volume of a three part series

Targeted at early career engineers, industry professionals and university students, this publication marks the first instalment of a planned three volume series. Volumes Two and Three are scheduled for release in 2027 and 2028 and will expand on advanced themes such as smart cities, cognitive power grids and the future of energy systems.
