Creative opportunities at school can shape future careers, and Horizon International School student Lilya Hasbini is already proving that talent, dedication and the right support can open remarkable doors. The Year 12 student has received the Emerging Talent in Film Production Award at the UAE’s Next Mastermind Awards 2026, recognising her growing achievements in filmmaking and visual storytelling.
Held at Anantara Downtown Dubai on 27 June, the awards celebrate innovators, entrepreneurs, creatives and emerging talent from across the UAE. At just 17 years old, Lilya stood out among an accomplished group of professionals and changemakers, highlighting the growing impact young creatives are making both inside and outside the classroom.
Lilya Hasbini Recognised for Original Film Project
Currently studying AS Levels in Media Studies, English Literature and Geography at Horizon International School, Lilya was independently selected by the Mastermind Awards team following a competitive screening process.
Judges recognised her original psychological thriller title sequence, Silent Halls, together with her expanding portfolio of creative projects and practical experience in film production.
Developed as part of her Media Studies coursework, Silent Halls explores the perspective of a teenage protagonist living with schizophrenia within an ordinary school environment. Through cinematic storytelling, the film gradually blurs the line between reality and illusion, demonstrating both technical skill and thoughtful storytelling.
For students considering creative subjects, Lilya’s achievement highlights how school coursework can become a springboard for wider opportunities.

Building Experience Beyond the Classroom
Alongside her studies, Lilya is gaining valuable industry experience as a Junior Creative and Production Executive Intern at Kaleido Pictures, a youth-led film organisation based in the MENA region.
There, she contributes to production coordination, creative planning and content development across collaborative film and visual media projects. Additionally, she is currently involved in several international productions, including projects featuring award-winning industry professionals.
Reflecting on the recognition, Lilya Hasbini said,
“Receiving this award means a great deal to me, as it recognises both the work I’ve put into film and the direction I hope to take it in the years ahead. Much of that journey began at school, where the Media department gave me the foundation and the confidence to develop my skills. The encouragement I found there gave me the space to take creative risks and grow as a filmmaker. That support has played a real part in getting me to where I am today, and I’m genuinely grateful for it.”
Leadership and Creativity Go Hand in Hand
Beyond filmmaking, Lilya plays an active role in school life. She serves as Deputy Head of Media for the Model United Nations and Head of Wellbeing within the Student Leadership Team.
Furthermore, she is a published co-author of Voices of Tomorrow, a collection that brings together young thought leaders sharing ideas on global issues and future change.
Her involvement across leadership, wellbeing and creative projects reflects the increasingly broad skill set universities and employers value, combining communication, collaboration and creative thinking.

Teacher Praises Lilya’s Commitment and Talent
Lilya’s Media Studies teacher believes her success reflects years of consistent hard work and determination.
Ms Jerdenne Wilson, Subject Lead for Media Studies at Horizon International School and Lilya’s teacher, praised both her talent and dedication and said,
“It has been an absolute pleasure to teach Lilya over the past three years and watch her grow in confidence and skill into the talented young person she is today. She has consistently excelled in the subject, achieving the highest grade in her cohort at GCSE last year, and went on to receive the attainment award for the subject this academic year. The coursework she submitted for the UAE Next Mastermind Awards is a testament to the dedication and craft she has brought to her studies, truly a masterpiece, and a clear reflection of just how gifted she is.”
A Promising Future in Film and Media
Looking ahead, Lilya hopes to study film and media at university, including an application to NYU Abu Dhabi. She plans to continue building a career in directing, film production and the wider creative industries.
Her achievement also reflects Horizon International School’s commitment to helping students pursue their passions beyond the curriculum. By encouraging creativity alongside academic excellence, schools can equip young people with the confidence and experience to succeed in rapidly growing industries.
For parents, educators and students alike, Lilya’s story demonstrates the value of creative education, practical experience and strong teacher support in helping young people turn ambition into achievement.
