International Museum Day is a global celebration of museums as vibrant cultural institutions that spark curiosity, encourage cultural exchange and connect communities around the world. Abu Dhabi has become one of the region’s leading cultural destinations, with world-class museums and heritage attractions spread across Saadiyat Island, Al Ain Region and Al Dhafra Region.
To mark International Museum Day on 18 May, visitors can enjoy free entry to Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and Louvre Abu Dhabi from 16 to 18 May.
Saadiyat Island at the Centre of Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Scene
Saadiyat Island has become the cultural heart of Abu Dhabi, bringing together art, history and storytelling in one destination.
The Saadiyat Cultural District is home to internationally recognised institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
1. Zayed National Museum
In less than six months since opening, Zayed National Museum has earned major international recognition, including a place on TIME Magazine’s 100 World’s Greatest Places 2026 list and recognition from Prix Versailles as one of the world’s seven most beautiful museums.
Designed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the museum’s iconic falcon-inspired towers house six permanent galleries, a temporary exhibition and Al Masar Garden.
Highlights include the Magan Boat reconstruction project and the Abu Dhabi Pearl, believed to be one of the world’s oldest natural pearls.
2. Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi takes visitors on a journey spanning 13.8 billion years, from the creation of the universe to the history of life on Earth.
The museum tells this global story through an Arabian perspective and features major exhibits including Stan the T. rex, one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons ever discovered, and the Murchison Meteorite.
Temporary exhibitions currently include March of the Triceratops and the 61st Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition.
3. Louvre Abu Dhabi
Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first universal museum in the Arab world and showcases more than 10,000 years of global human creativity.
Its famous dome creates a striking “rain of light” effect across the museum spaces below.
Visitors can also explore Picasso, the Figure, an exhibition running until the end of May that traces Pablo Picasso’s fascination with the human form across seven decades.
4. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi
teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi offers an immersive digital art experience across more than 17,000 square metres.
The interactive installations combine light, movement and water to create changing environments that respond to visitors in real time.
New artworks including Massless Suns and Dark Suns and Megaliths in the Roots Garden have recently been added.
5. Al Ain Museum
Al Ain Museum was established in 1969 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and remains the UAE’s first museum.
Located within Al Ain’s UNESCO World Heritage Oasis, the museum traces the region’s history from around 300,000 years ago to modern times through archaeological discoveries and historical artefacts.
6. Qasr Al Hosn
Qasr Al Hosn is home to Abu Dhabi’s oldest stone structure, originally built as a watchtower in the 1760s to protect a freshwater source.
The fort later expanded into a royal residence and was transformed into a museum in 2018 following extensive restoration work.
Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into Abu Dhabi’s early history through artefacts and archival collections.
7. Al Maqta’a Museum
Al Maqta’a Museum is housed inside the restored Al Maqta’a Fort and showcases vintage police vehicles, uniforms and archival materials.
Nearby stands the historic Al Maqta’a Tower, one of Abu Dhabi’s earliest defensive structures.
8. Delma Museum
Delma Museum is located on Delma Island in Al Dhafra Region, around 42 kilometres off the Abu Dhabi coast.
The island was first inhabited nearly 7,000 years ago and contains important archaeological and heritage sites.
The museum itself occupies a historic pearl merchant’s home dating back to the early 20th century, offering visitors a unique cultural experience away from the city.
