Dubai Student Empowers Economic Independence Through Education and Enterprise

A Dubai-based student is turning financial knowledge into a force for social impact. Yug Sancheti, a Grade 11 student at GEMS Modern Academy and a mentee of university guidance experts UniHawk, is helping underprivileged young women in India build economic independence through financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Driven by a strong interest in finance and social impact, Yug partnered with the community-focused platform Tribes for Good to design and deliver initiatives aimed at improving financial awareness among women aged 16 to 25. The programme focuses on equipping participants with practical skills in saving, budgeting, investing, and financial goal setting, enabling them to build more stable and sustainable livelihoods.

From Classroom Learning to Community Impact

At just 15 years old, Yug developed and led a structured six-week financial literacy programme that reached more than 40 women, delivered in collaboration with local organisations including the Calcutta Foundation. The sessions provided accessible and practical financial education tailored to real-life challenges faced by women with limited access to formal financial systems.

Beyond education, Yug extended the programme’s impact by launching a crowdfunding campaign on Milaap to support women-led microbusinesses. The funds raised helped participants transform skills into income-generating ventures, strengthening financial resilience at both individual and household levels.

One beneficiary, Sima Kundu, was able to purchase a second-hand sewing machine and has since begun tailoring garments, marking a significant step towards financial independence. The initiative, developed with mentorship from Tribes for Good founder Mandeep Kaur, has inspired wider community engagement, encouraging more women to view entrepreneurship as a viable pathway into the workforce.

A Vision Rooted in Purpose

Yug credits UniHawk for helping him find direction and purpose through mentorship and exposure to meaningful community initiatives

Explaining his motivation, Yug said,

“I’ve always felt that creating a better understanding of how finances work can be a force for good in underprivileged communities. The women we work with face limited access to financial knowledge and opportunities, so I wanted to help bridge that gap, to bring clarity and empowerment to their future.”

Reflecting on the experience, he added,

“Supporting these women has been an enriching journey, seeing them grow more financially confident with each session and begin applying what they learnt to their own situations. Raising the enterprise funding allowed me to witness firsthand how financial education can change lives, as women transformed their ideas into a source of income and personal pride. It was an amazing opportunity for me to learn while helping others improve their way of life.”

A Broader Commitment to Social Change

Yug’s work with Tribes for Good builds on a wider commitment to community development. His journey in women’s empowerment began with teaching IT skills to girls in orphanages. Alongside fellow co-founder Kashish Sancheti, he launched Voices of Vision, a free initiative designed to strengthen communication and computer literacy among children aged 8 to 14, later expanding the programme to support underprivileged women through financial education.

At school, Yug is actively involved in sustainability initiatives, including a paper-recycling project aimed at reducing waste and promoting environmental awareness. He balances his academic studies with debating, football, and a growing interest in business, finance, and economics.

Mentorship That Shapes Purpose

Yug credits UniHawk with helping him align his interests with real-world challenges. He concluded,

“UniHawk has helped me understand how my interests align with global challenges. They encouraged me to explore my passions beyond academics and think about how I can contribute to society, which is what motivated me to get involved in Tribes for Good.”
