UAE Announces Transformative Education Reforms
The UAE has unveiled a series of major education reforms for the 2025–2026 academic year, introducing new policies that modernise learning, prioritise student wellbeing, and strengthen inclusivity. From AI in classrooms to compulsory PE and smartphone bans, these updates mark some of the most significant changes to the nation’s education system in recent years.

AI Lessons Introduced from Kindergarten
Artificial intelligence will officially become part of the UAE public school curriculum from kindergarten through Grade 12. Students will progress from foundational AI concepts to advanced applications and ethical considerations.

Cyber Safety Curriculum from Grade 1
Starting in 2025, cyber safety will be formally introduced as a subject from Grade 1 through Grade 12. Lessons will cover digital literacy, online protection, and strategies to manage cyber risks, combining both theory and hands-on practice.
This step reflects the UAE’s national focus on ensuring students are prepared to navigate a digital-first world safely and responsibly.
Remote Fridays During Ramadan
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has confirmed the return of remote learning on Fridays during Ramadan under the initiative “Ramadan with Family.” Students will have the option to attend school in person or study online, though examinations scheduled for Fridays will remain in person.
A detailed guidance manual has been developed to support parents, teachers, and staff in implementing this hybrid approach.

Smartphone Ban Across UAE Schools
To reduce distractions, safeguard wellbeing, and limit misuse of technology, the Ministry of Education has introduced a nationwide smartphone ban. Students will no longer be allowed to bring personal smartphones onto school premises.
The ban will be strictly enforced through inspections and confiscations:
- First-time violations – phone confiscated for one month.
- Repeat violations – phone held until the end of the academic year.
This policy is intended to help students focus on learning and social interaction while reducing issues related to privacy and inappropriate use.
Compulsory PE in Abu Dhabi
From 2025–2026, physical education (PE) will be compulsory in Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has mandated at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day for every student.
Schools will expand their PE offerings to cater to varied interests and abilities, ensuring students remain active, engaged, and healthy.
Inclusive Admissions for Students of Determination
ADEK has also introduced a new inclusion policy to strengthen access to education for students of determination. Schools are no longer permitted to deny admission to students with special educational needs or disabilities without valid justification and ADEK’s involvement.
Institutions must demonstrate adequate support structures, staff training, and resources to accommodate diverse learning needs, making inclusivity a non-negotiable part of the school admissions process.
Unified Holidays and Updated Exams
In addition to the above changes, the new academic year introduces unified school holidays across the UAE, ensuring consistency between emirates. Updates have also been made to examination schedules and assessment models, aligning them with international standards while preserving cultural and national priorities.
