HE Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Attends Canadian University Dubai’s 15th Commencement Ceremony

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, affirmed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE), under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, continues to strengthen its global position as a leading model in investing in people, advancing education, empowering youth, and building a knowledge and innovation-based society.

He noted that universities and academic institutions play a pivotal role in preparing generations capable of shaping the future and contributing to comprehensive national development.

Canadian University Dubai (CUD) celebrated a major milestone as it honoured 600 graduates during its 15th graduation ceremony, which also coincided with the university’s 20th anniversary in Dubai. Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the ceremony recognised graduates from disciplines including management, health sciences, engineering, psychology, architecture, communication, digital innovation and sustainability. This year’s cohort was named the “Class of Pride and Glory”, reflecting the confidence, ambition and resilience that continue to shape the UAE’s development journey.

The event was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, alongside Mr. Buti Saeed Al Ghandi, Chancellor and Chairman of the University Board of Trustees, Professor Karim Chelli, President and Vice-Chancellor of Canadian University Dubai, faculty members, parents and graduates.

Education remains central to national progress

Addressing graduates, His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan highlighted the role of education in driving national development and preparing future generations to contribute to society.

“In the UAE, we firmly believe that education is the true foundation for the advancement and prosperity of nations, and that investing in people is the most important and enduring investment.”

He noted that the UAE’s leadership continues to prioritise education, innovation and scientific research while creating opportunities for young people to develop their talents and contribute to the country’s future. He also encouraged graduates to view learning as a lifelong journey, particularly at a time when technology, artificial intelligence and sustainability are reshaping industries around the world.

Reflecting on the cohort’s title, Sheikh Nahyan said it represented both pride in the UAE’s achievements and confidence in the next generation’s ability to continue the country’s progress through knowledge, determination and hard work.

Graduates encouraged to lead with values and purpose

A recurring theme throughout the ceremony was the importance of combining academic achievement with strong values and social responsibility.

Sheikh Nahyan emphasised that universities play a vital role not only in developing knowledge and skills but also in building character and promoting understanding between cultures. He highlighted the UAE’s reputation as a global model for tolerance, coexistence and cultural diversity, encouraging graduates to carry those values into their future careers and communities.

“The UAE has proven that cultural diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and prosperity.”

He also praised Canadian University Dubai’s contribution to higher education over the past two decades, describing the institution as a successful example of academic excellence, innovation and international outlook aligned with the UAE’s vision for the future.

Celebrating 20 years of growth and achievement

During the ceremony, Chancellor Mr. Buti Saeed Al Ghandi reflected on the university’s 20-year journey and the support it received from national leaders since its establishment. He said the institution was founded on a commitment to academic excellence, innovation and meaningful contributions to knowledge creation.

Professor Karim Chelli highlighted the university’s achievements in expanding access to education and creating opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. He told graduates that their education had equipped them not only with academic knowledge but also with the values needed to make a positive impact.

“Whatever path you choose to pursue in the future, I encourage you to place humanity at the centre of everything you do.”

Student speakers also reflected on the role education has played in shaping their journeys. Graduating student Shaima Alhai, the first Emirati woman to serve as President of the CUD Student Council, spoke about the opportunities available to Emirati women today and the importance of education in supporting national development.

Architecture graduate Danica Ferreira expressed gratitude to the UAE and its leadership for creating an environment where young people from different backgrounds can learn, grow and succeed.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the CUD Awards, recognising outstanding contributions from faculty and administrative teams. Graduates and guests were also treated to a unique performance that combined artificial intelligence and music, developed in collaboration with the University’s School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, as a tribute to the UAE’s leadership and commitment to innovation.
