After placing Dubai firmly on the global education map, Arbor School is entering a new chapter; one that reimagines what sustainability, learning and leadership look like in practice. Building on its recognition as the World’s Best School for Environmental Action, Arbor is focused on shaping the next generation of changemakers through an expanded secondary curriculum, innovative community partnerships and emphasis on student experience.

From Recognition to Responsibility

For Principal Gemma Thornley, global recognition comes with a sense of purpose.

“Awards are affirming, but our real responsibility is to keep evolving,” she explains. “We want to show that sustainability is a mindset – not just about the environment, but about how young people think, lead and make decisions about the future.”

This drives Arbor’s development plans this year from its growing Sixth Form and new sports pitch to support wellbeing and competitive sport, to piloting a marine conservation campaign with UK charity, Ocean Generation, and experiential learning opportunities that stretch beyond the classroom.

Learning That Leads Somewhere

At the heart of Arbor’s approach is a Secondary and Sixth Form programme that blends academic rigour with purpose-driven learning. Following the British National Curriculum, students select GCSE, A Level and BTEC pathways designed to develop curiosity, independence and global awareness.

To support them, the school’s Futures Counselling Programme provides personalised career and university guidance, with visiting admissions teams from the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and other global institutions helping students understand what’s possible after Arbor.

Thornley says,

“Futures counselling isn’t just about university placement. It’s about helping each student discover what drives them whether that’s STEM, sustainability, sport or the arts – and ensuring they have the confidence and direction to pursue it.”

Real-World Learning, Real Impact

This academic year, students are connecting their classroom learning to global issues through partnerships that put purpose into practice. A new collaboration with Sparklo, a UAE cleantech pioneer, enables Arbor students to take part in on-campus recycling that rewards positive environmental behaviour, a first for a UAE school.

Beyond campus, field trips to lakes, waterworks and conservation expeditions immerse students in real-world problem-solving, deepening their understanding of ecology, culture and systems thinking.

Thornley notes,

“Experiences like these make learning tangible. They build empathy and perspective – and that’s where real development happens.”

Leadership and Life Beyond the Classroom

Character education remains a defining feature of Arbor life. Through student ambassador programmes, eco committees and peer leadership initiatives, learners take an active role in shaping their school community.

The introduction of the new sports pitch has expanded opportunities for both competitive and recreational activity, reinforcing Arbor’s belief that movement and wellbeing are fundamental to whole-child development.

Thornley says,

“Sport teaches teamwork, resilience and joy. Those are life skills every young person needs especially in a world where adaptability is key.”

Building Futures, Shaping Change

As a new academic year begins, Arbor School’s goal is clear: to nurture confident, compassionate young people who will lead with intellect and empathy.

From ecoliteracy and community partnerships to creative arts, sports and student voice, every element of the school’s development points toward a holistic model of education one that is sustainable in the truest sense.

Thornley reflects,

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved but we’re even more excited about what comes next watching our students grow into the changemakers our world truly needs.”
