by Belinda Breeze

In the dynamic landscape of Dubai’s cultural and creative industries, the University of Europe for Applied Sciences in Dubai is proud to announce the launch of the UAE’s first-ever Master’s in Visual & Experience Design. Responding to the increasing demand for creative professionals in the wake of Dubai surpassing global creative hubs, London and Paris, the programme is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of creative leaders.

Dubai Culture announced that Dubai’s rise as the global leader in new projects started through foreign direct investment (FDI), with a record-breaking 451 projects in 2022, has propelled the creative sector to the forefront of economic development. This surge, resulting in an impressive Dh7.36 billion ($2 billion) FDI capital inflow, has solidified Dubai’s position as a creative capital on the world stage. *

In alignment with the UAE government’s intensified focus on creative industries, University of Europe for Applied Sciences is pioneering the Master’s in Visual & Experience Design to contribute to the ambitious goals outlined in the Dubai Creative Economy Strategy. UAE media’s Office highlighted that the strategy aims to double the creative industries’ contribution to the Emirate’s GDP from 2.6% in 2020 to 5% by 2025, reflecting a commitment to fostering a vibrant and innovative society. *

  • Professor Dahlia Mahmoud, an esteemed authority in Visual & Experience Design at University of Europe for Applied Sciences, states, “Creativity diversifies income, it plays a crucial role in building industries and projects economic stability. In the current business environment, being people-centric, explorative and innovative are essential qualities for leaders.  Without creativity, innovation falters. Creativity questions the status quo and envisions transformative grounds for different outcomes. Dreamers dream, designers conceptualise and doers’ prototype – these are the foundations of innovation, and creativity is the driving force.”
  • She added, “The societal importance of creativity in communication, inclusivity, inspiration, compassion and community is also vital. Creativity is not just a skill but an indispensable force shaping societies and economies.”

Highlighting the growing recognition of the importance of creative skills, UNESCO notes, “98% of college placement officers think creative skills are essential for college and career success.” The global creative economy, accounting for 3.1% of GDP and 6.2% of worldwide employment, is a major driver of innovation and economic growth, as noted by the UN Conference on Trade and Development. *

University of Europe for Applied Sciences’ master’s in visual & Experience Design is designed to bridge the gap between business and creativity. Welcoming its first cohort in January 2024, the program combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, ensuring an interdisciplinary approach that prepares students for the evolving demands of the professional world.
