In an age defined by rapid technological change and creative disruption, the ability to think like a designer has become one of the most valuable skills young people can acquire. Design literacy, the capacity to observe, question, imagine, and create with purpose, is emerging as a new universal language that empowers students not only to shape objects and spaces but also to understand systems, communicate ideas, and drive positive changes in their communities.

Across the world, economies are being reshaped by creativity. The UAE’s growing focus on the creative economy, underpinned by national strategies such as Dubai’s Creative Economy Strategy, places design at the centre of social and economic transformation. This vision recognises that future-ready talent will not rely solely on technical knowledge but on the ability to apply design-led thinking to complex challenges, from sustainable cities to digital experiences.

Beyond Artistic Skill: Building Future-Ready Minds

Design literacy goes far beyond artistic skill. It develops the mindset to see connections between people, technology, and the environment, and to translate those insights into solutions. It teaches empathy by encouraging learners to step into others’ perspectives, builds systems thinking by showing how individual choices affect the world around us, and nurtures resilience by celebrating experimentation and learning from failure.

In the classroom, this translates into students working collaboratively, exploring multiple ways to solve problems, and communicating their ideas visually and verbally. Whether sketching a product concept, designing a service, or reimagining a community space, design literacy trains individuals to ask why before deciding how. This blend of creativity and critical thinking is what employers increasingly seek in every sector, not just in traditional design industries.

The UAE’s Creative Future

Globally, design-driven companies consistently outperform their peers in terms of growth and customer engagement. In the UAE, the rise of design consultancies, smart-city initiatives, and creative districts such as Alserkal Avenue and Dubai Design District demonstrates how creativity and commerce are intertwined.

Preparing students for this landscape requires nurturing curiosity from an early age and providing opportunities to learn by making, exploring, and reflecting. At the School of Textiles and Design, design literacy is seen as a lifelong foundation. Programmes in Communication Design, Fashion Branding, Interior Architecture, and Design Management train students to think across disciplines and address real-world issues, from sustainable materials to human-centred technologies.

Through collaboration with industry and public institutions, students learn that design is not only about aesthetics but also about purpose and impact.

Introducing the SoTD Holiday Portfolio Camp

To extend this philosophy to younger learners, the School has launched the SoTD Holiday Portfolio Camp, a hands-on introduction to design for high-school students. The camp offers an engaging mix of creative exploration and practical tasks that encourage participants to see the world through a designer’s eyes.

Each session is structured to build both confidence and curiosity: a short interactive introduction, a guided demonstration, and a challenge that allows students to apply what they learn using accessible materials or digital tools.

The Holiday Portfolio Camp reflects our belief that design education should be inclusive and inspiring. It welcomes students from all backgrounds, even those who have never considered themselves creative, and helps them discover how design connects to everyday life.

By the end of the camp, participants leave not only with a portfolio piece but with a new way of thinking about how ideas become reality. Many go on to pursue creative programmes at university, equipped with an understanding of how design can improve products, services, and experiences.

Shaping Creative Leaders for the Future

As we prepare the next generation for tomorrow’s creative economy, design literacy emerges as a vital life skill. It gives students the confidence to question, the tools to create, and the vision to imagine better futures. When combined with innovation, empathy, and sustainability, design becomes a bridge between technology and humanity, a way to ensure that progress serves people and the planet.

Through initiatives such as the SoTD Holiday Portfolio Camp, Heriot-Watt University Dubai is proud to contribute to this growing movement. By inspiring young minds to explore, make, and think differently, we are not only nurturing future designers but also shaping the creative leaders of tomorrow’s world.
