Dunecrest Open House November 12

Dunecrest American School is known for its welcoming community, personalised learning, and commitment to raising student achievement every day. Ahead of the 12 November Open House, the team shares insights into what families can look forward to and how Dunecrest continues to shape well-rounded, confident learners.

About the Open House

What can families expect when they attend the upcoming Open House on November 12, and why is it an important opportunity to experience Dunecrest first hand?

At Dunecrest, beyond our world-class educational approach, we pride ourselves on the closeness of our community and the warmth of our welcome. When families attend our upcoming Open House, they can expect an informative, and inviting experience that truly reflects  who we are as a learning community. The event will be more than a tour, it’s an opportunity to experience our thriving learning environment; meet our faculty, interact with student ambassadors, and explore our wonderful campus.

Open House offers families the chance to gather insights into our U.S. and IB Diploma pathways, and understand how we design learning to respond to the needs of all our students.  Witnessing the culture of Dunecrest—and seeing our unerring focus upon ‘raising student achievement every day, every way’ is something we hope all visiting families will experience during the day.

Curriculum & Academic Pathways

Dunecrest offers both the American curriculum and the IB Diploma Programme. How do these pathways prepare students for success at top universities worldwide?

We are one of the few schools in the UAE and the wider region to offer both the U.S. curriculum, Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. This breadth of choice, provides students with flexible pathways to match their strengths, goals, and learning styles. Both programs are academically rigorous and internationally recognised, and each is designed to prepare students for the demands of top universities and colleges, worldwide

How does the school balance academic rigour with supporting students’ individual learning styles?

We believe academic success is underpinned by strong systems of personalised support. Balancing rigour with individual learning styles is fundamental. Our faculty are trained to implement a range of pedagogical approaches , adapt assessments, and use harvested data to ensure that each student is challenged appropriately and supported effectively.

We foster a culture where students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, supported by strong pastoral care, learning support services, and enrichment opportunities. Whether a student needs extra academic scaffolding or is ready to pursue advanced coursework, we meet them where they are and help them grow from there.

Additionally, due to our tight-knit community, our teachers truly know each student – not just academically, but personally. This connection enables us to build confidence, resilience, and independence while maintaining high standards in the classroom. The result is a learning environment where students are both stretched and supported, ensuring they achieve their personal best.

Student Progress & Support

Could you share how the school monitors students’ progress throughout the year?

The monitoring of student progress is key in supporting student development.  To this end, we employ a range of systems that track student performance across a range of metrics from: academics, social, and emotional. Our faculty use a blend of formative and summative assessments, classroom observations, and regular feedback to track student growth over time.

At Dunecrest data collection and analysis is fundamental to supporting student growth.  To do this effectively and systematically, we deploy a range of assessment tools and platforms designed to help identify strengths, gaps, and trends at both the individual and grade levels. This includes regular benchmark testing, performance tasks, and skill-based rubrics aligned with curriculum standards.

However, progress monitoring is more than just numbers. We hold regular student review meetings, where teachers, counselors, and learning support specialists collaborate to discuss student needs and progress. Families are also kept engaged through regular reporting, parent-teacher conferences, and access to digital platforms where they can track academic updates in real time. This ensures a transparent and powerful partnership between school and parents, which is key to driving student success.

What systems or support structures are in place to ensure every student reaches their full potential?

At Dunecrest, we are absolutely committed to ensuring all students are supported by a framework that nurtures each child’s unique potential. This begins with personalised learning—teachers design lessons and assignments that accommodate different learning styles, abilities, and interests.

We also offer a comprehensive Student Support Services team, which includes learning support specialists, English Language Learning (ELL) educators, counselors, and academic advisors. These professionals work closely with students, families, and teachers to provide targeted interventions, enrichment opportunities, and socio-emotional support.

Our advisory program, mentoring opportunities, and experienced counseling services help students develop self-awareness, resilience, and life skills—all crucial for long-term success. Additionally, we provide regular academic coaching and college and career guidance, helping students set meaningful goals and take ownership of their learning journey.

Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that every student at Dunecrest is seen, heard, and empowered to thrive – academically, personally, and socially.

Holistic Education

Dunecrest often speaks about educating the “whole child.” What does holistic education mean in practice at your school?

For us, holistic education means nurturing all aspects of a child’s development: academic, social, emotional, physical, and ethical. To implement this we aim to create a multi-faceted learning environment that challenges students academically,  but also encourages them to explore their passions and see learning as more than merely participation in the classroom.

At Dunecrest, we seek to prepare students for their lives beyond school and university. We seek to provide them with the skills to contribute not only to our community but the ones they will join when they leave us.

Beyond academics, how do you support students’ social and emotional development?

Beyond our excellent counseling program, structured advisory classes and highly professional faculty, we are proud of how we build community. We have a firmly embedded house system, wonderful service projects, a wide range of leadership opportunities and expansive extra curricular activities. These things create a sense of belonging and connection among students.

Community & Diversity

Dunecrest is known for its diverse student body. How does this cultural mix enhance the learning experience?

Our eclectic student body is one of Dunecrest’s greatest strengths,” says Michael Roberts, School Director. “Having worked in numerous diverse settings over my international teaching career, I can confidently say that Dunecrest truly stands out as a global learning environment. With students from a wide range of nationalities, backgrounds, and perspectives, this diversity naturally enhances discussions, fosters empathy, and encourages students to view issues through multiple lenses – a key aspect of developing international-mindedness. It’s a part of our identity that we are most proud of.

They bring a mix of IB Diploma and American curriculum expertise, and they create supportive, engaging classrooms where all students can grow. Many of our faculty have Masters degrees and have diverse and expansive teaching expertise.

Looking Ahead

What qualities do you hope Dunecrest graduates will carry with them when they leave the school?

A Dunecrest graduate will leave us  as a thoughtful, empathetic, principled individual who is resilient in the face of change, able to adapt quickly in our complex, rapidly-changing world. Ultimately we strive to shape individuals that can contribute positively to any community they join.

How does the school engage parents as partners in their child’s educational journey?

Any successful school harnesses a strong bond and partnership with their parent community. Parents are engaged through regular communication, workshops, conferences, and community events, all designed to keep them involved and informed. We have an incredibly passionate Dunecrest Parents Association who are active in hosting numerous events throughout the school year. Additionally, our campus is a hub for parents to congregate and become involved in school life.
