BRIGHTON COLLEGE ABU DHABI: EDUCATING WITH PURPOSE, GUIDING WITH INTEGRITY

by Belinda Breeze

In the corridors of educational excellence, one figure often stands as the cornerstone of success: the headmaster.

Enter the world of Scott Carnochan, a visionary leader and Headmaster of Brighton College Abu Dhabi whose name has become synonymous with transformative education. As the driving force behind a prestigious institution, his leadership transcends conventional boundaries, fostering a culture of inclusivity and academic excellence, ensuring that each learner reaches their fullest potential.

Education UAE: What inspired you to become an educator, and how has your journey led you to this role?

Scott Carnochan: I was extremely fortunate to be able to go to a boarding school in the UK (my parents lived in the Far East) where I was inspired by a number of my teachers. I was destined for a career in the British Armed Forces when my planning took a turn as a direct result of my 1st XV rugby coach, who inspired me in many ways and who I am in no doubt shaped my leadership throughout my career. It is for this personal reason, and others of course, that I am constantly reminding my colleagues of the impact they can have on a child’s life, genuinely shaping them for their future. I will be forever grateful for the positive impact this teacher had on my life and for the change of direction my journey took as a result of his inspiration.

Education UAE: What is the school’s educational philosophy and approach to teaching and learning?

Scott Carnochan: Much of what has been captured in the above question encapsulates my educational ethos. In addition, and whilst it may sound like a cliché, we must remember that we are in a privileged position and responsible for making a positive difference in the lives of the children in our care. At the same time, we are unashamedly aspirational for our pupils and want them to become the best version of themselves, not a second-class version of someone else. I have always believed that if a child feels safe, trusted, known, supported, and appropriately challenged free from the fear of failure, then there is every likelihood that they will thrive in our care.

Education UAE: Can you describe the technology infrastructure and resources available to students for learning purposes at Brighton College Abu Dhabi?

Scott Carnochan: The experience of the pandemic was obviously overwhelmingly challenging for schools but it did result in a digital acceleration and upskilling, notably of some teachers. I think the best schools have learned from those years, harnessed any learnings, and dismissed those aspects that weren’t positive. Whilst I think we are well-placed, the speed of change is such that we need to have a clear digital strategy, to avoid jumping on the next fashion trend! Yes, technology can and should be used to enhance learning but should not be the sole vehicle. At the same time, a key challenge for schools is in the digital readiness of their pupils so that they are prepared for the world in which they will enter and where technology will play an increasingly important role.

Education UAE: In your role, what strategies do you use to support and encourage professional development among the teaching staff?

Scott Carnochan: Whilst of course there will be times when colleagues are signposted towards PD to support their growth, I am keen that PD is driven by the individuals. The very best teachers I have worked with are reflective practitioners who know their strengths and areas for development and, as such, are well-placed to take ownership of how to support these areas of growth. I will always support a teacher who demonstrates this proactive approach to their professional growth and development.

Education UAE: Can you describe a particularly rewarding moment or achievement in your role as a headmaster that stands out in your memory?

Scott Carnochan: One of the joys of my role is I have the privilege to share wonderful moments with pupils and colleagues alike. One clear example this year was from one of our oldest pupils who had aspirations to progress into the world of film and music. In his journey, he had faced some challenges but he overcame them and won a full scholarship to study music in the US. I could not have been prouder or happier for him. A true moment of joy!

Education UAE: How does the school prepare students for higher education and future career paths?

Scott Carnochan: In Year 12 University Week, pupils are empowered to choose the right degree course and institution through a range of workshops and talks from invited guests ranging from universities to alumni. During this week, pupils are off timetable and therefore have time to invest in their future by researching and university planning.

Beyond the classroom, our experienced teaching staff work alongside pupils to prepare for applications to varied and competitive courses – for example, the BCAD Medical Society arranges talks with practitioners, provides pupil lead presentations, and shares recent medical articles, and our Law Society has engaged professionals as well as Brighton alumni to present to the group on topical issues. From the start of Year 13, the Sixth Form Leadership Team, tutors, and our dedicated university and careers counsellor work closely with pupils to finalise their choices and prepare application documents. As well as enjoying links with top UK universities, which often present to our students, we offer specialised in-house support, ranging from delivering information sessions to pupils and parents, leading workshops on writing standout personal statements and offering feedback on application essays, to offering mock interviews and working with the Oxbridge Alumni Association and Brighton alumni to ensure our pupils are prepared to aim high.

Education UAE: How does the school promote environmental sustainability and awareness among students?

Scott Carnochan: At Brighton College, we empower our pupils to lead the charge on sustainability. From PrePrep’s Eco-Warriors to Prep’s Eco-Reps and Senior School’s Sustainability Reps, leadership roles ensure pupils are at the centre of everything we do. These pupils collaborate across the school and with stakeholders to drive awareness and enact meaningful change. Moreover, sustainability is seamlessly integrated into our curriculum, ensuring its discussion and teaching across all levels. Through visits to local farms, participation in COP28, community projects, and national competitions, we elevate awareness and foster engagement school-wide.

Education UAE: If you could organise a school-wide talent show and participate, what talent would you showcase?

Scott Carnochan: Gosh, I am not sure how to answer that and whatever I say, my children will be mortified! Perhaps one for others to answer.
