Spokesperson: Geoffrey Alphonso, CEO of Alef Education

Its flagship Alef Platform enables adaptive, student-centred learning by combining artificial intelligence, data science, and real-time insights to improve engagement and learning outcomes. The platform is complemented by Alef Pathways, Abjadiyat, and Arabits, which extend personalised learning across core subjects and Arabic language development through curriculum-aligned, interactive content.

Through its ecosystem of digital learning solutions, Alef Education supports educators with actionable insights, reduces teacher workload, and enhances student progress tracking. The company’s mission is to advance equity, access, and excellence in education by enabling scalable, data-driven, and personalised learning experiences across diverse learning environments and education systems.

Education UAE: Schools across the UAE have moved to distance learning at short notice over the past few weeks. From what you are seeing on the platform, how are students actually coping with learning from home?

We have witnessed a significant transition, but students are adapting remarkably well, especially in schools where AI-powered tools have already been adopted. Across our platforms, we are seeing record usage and strong engagement, with students attending lessons, completing assignments, and interacting with teachers in real time. Currently, we support over 200,000 students across 500+ schools, enabled by 11,000 teachers delivering thousands of daily lessons, with consistently high satisfaction among educators.

Education UAE: Alef Pathways was built with hybrid and remote learning in mind but there is a difference between planned remote learning and emergency remote learning. How does the platform hold up when the shift happens overnight?

Alef Pathways is designed for flexibility, ensuring seamless continuity around the clock. Its personalised, data-driven approach lets students instantly pick up where they left off, with structured pathways, real-time feedback, and AI-supported guidance. For educators, built-in insights and assessments ensure visibility and control. The result is a seamless transition that keeps learning steady, engaged, and uninterrupted, even in moments of sudden change.

Education UAE: One of the biggest concerns parents have right now is whether their child is falling behind. How does Alef Education’s diagnostic model help identify and close those gaps quickly when a student returns to the classroom?

This is one of the key challenges that we aim to address. Our AI-powered diagnostic tools use adaptive assessments to rapidly identify the exact areas where a student is struggling. Based on these insights, the system creates a personalised learning pathway that targets specific gaps through tailored lessons and practice. Real-time analytics enable teachers to intervene early and refine instruction, helping students catch up more quickly while giving parents clear visibility into progress and improvement. This way, when students return to the classroom after a long break, teachers will have access to clear and actionable insights that can seamlessly guide their recovery.

Education UAE: Teachers are managing an enormous amount during distance learning lesson delivery, pastoral care, parent communication. How does Alef Education help to reduce teacher workload?

Recognising that teachers have a lot to manage during such times, our focus remains on easing their workload by tracking progress, identifying gaps, and managing assignments. Our platforms leverage AI-powered technology to streamline administrative tasks and deliver data-driven insights, enabling educators to focus more on teaching and directly supporting their students. By reducing administrative workload, our solutions help teachers manage their responsibilities more effectively while maintaining high-quality instruction and enriching the overall learning experience. The platforms also provide real-time insights and automate routine tasks, enabling teachers to focus on what matters most, supporting students and delivering quality education. For instance, Alef AI Tutor supports personalised learning by guiding students through concepts at their own pace, while also providing teachers with actionable insights into performance and learning.

Education UAE: The AI Tutor feature is particularly relevant right now when students may not have a teacher immediately available to help. Can you talk us through how that works in practice?

The Alef AI Tutor uses advanced artificial intelligence to analyse each student’s performance and personalise learning in real time, providing immediate, in-the-moment support for students. It adapts to individual strengths and gaps, offering tailored explanations, practice, and guidance aligned with the curriculum so learners can get immediate support even when a teacher isn’t right there. The aim is to guide students to understand the next step rather than simply providing answers. This is especially crucial to ensuring that learning remains uninterrupted, even when tutor support isn’t accessible. Such an approach empowers students to progress at their own pace, supported by targeted feedback and adaptive pathways that reinforce understanding and confidence.

Education UAE: For families without strong technical confidence at home, what does the support structure look like? How does the Guardian App help parents feel less in the dark?

Families don’t need to be tech-savvy to be actively involved in our educational ecosystem. The Alef Guardian App provides parents with real-time visibility into their child’s learning activities, progress, and performance trends. Designed as a comprehensive digital platform, it enables parents, guardians, teachers, and administrative staff to play an active role in each student’s learning journey. With built-in communication features, the app ensures seamless, instant interaction between teachers, students, and families, strengthening collaboration and driving meaningful engagement, especially during periods of distance learning. The platform’s strong user feedback, reflected in its 4.8/5 App Store rating, underscores its ease of use and the trust it has built among families.

Education UAE: There is a lot of conversation right now about screen fatigue, especially for younger students. How does Alef Education balance meaningful learning with engagement without overwhelming children who are already spending their entire day on a device?

To address growing concerns around screen fatigue, especially among young learners, we prioritise purposeful digital learning. We utilise short, interactive lessons paired with built-in reflection to foster high engagement while limiting total screen time. Using our platform, teachers can schedule offline activities and supplement digital lessons with hands-on exercises. This approach promotes a balance, maximising pedagogical effectiveness while prioritising students’ cognitive and physical well-being.

Education UAE: Looking at the broader picture – what do you think this period is teaching us, permanently, about how schools in the UAE should think about remote and hybrid learning going forward?

The past few weeks have not only reinforced existing adoption trends but have accelerated them, underscoring the importance of nurturing flexible and resilient education systems. The period has also shown us that remote and hybrid education models are here to stay, ensuring learning continuity at all times.

Similarly, educational institutions are increasingly realising that the use of AI-powered tools is no longer a future enhancement, but a present-day necessity due to unexpected situations, be it regional unrest or other unforeseen circumstances that require schools to transition to remote and online learning. Moving forward, remote and hybrid capabilities will likely become integral to school planning, functioning as a vital extension rather than a replacement for in-person instruction.
