Al Ain English Speaking School (AAESS), one of Abu Dhabi’s most established British curriculum schools, has announced the appointment of Ian Temple as its new Principal, effective at the start of the 2025–2026 academic year. The school, known for its academic excellence, inclusive ethos, and innovative approach, is set to begin a new chapter under his leadership.
Temple brings over 30 years of experience in education and school leadership, having held senior roles in the UK, Europe, Malaysia, and the Middle East. Most recently, he served as Principal at Nobel Algarve British International School in Lagoa, Portugal. His career is marked by a proven ability to drive progress and achieve exceptional outcomes for students.
A Leader with Global Expertise
Throughout his career, Temple has developed extensive knowledge of the English National Curriculum, including GCSE, IGCSE, CIE, A Levels, and the IB. His focus on student attainment and progress has consistently helped schools earn outstanding ratings, especially in the areas of academic growth and performance.
Holding a master’s degree in education and the UK’s National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), Temple is passionate about helping students excel in their interests, track their growth, and celebrate achievementswithin a supportive environment. He also believes strongly in collaboration between educators and families and prioritises the professional development of teachers to maintain high standards.

Temple succeeds Andrew Thomas, who led AAESS for over a decade. Under Thomas, the school achieved a “Very Good” rating from the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). During this period, students also earned top accolades in Cambridge and Pearson Board examinations.
In 2024, AAESS students received recognition for the highest mark in the UAE for iGCSE Chemistry and A/S Psychology, as well as the highest mark in the world for A/S Psychology — a testament to the school’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence.
