The UAE’s education sector witnessed wide ranging reforms in 2025, with curriculum updates, new policies and expanded investment in future focused learning. These changes reflect a national commitment to building a competitive, knowledge driven economy aligned with long term development goals.

1. Zayed Education Foundation Launched

The year marked the launch of the Zayed Education Foundation, an initiative aimed at supporting 100,000 young talents by 2035. The foundation focuses on developing future leaders in science, economy and sustainability through targeted education pathways and long term capacity building.

2. Artificial Intelligence Introduced as a Core Subject

Artificial intelligence became a compulsory subject from kindergarten through Grade 12, positioning the UAE among the first countries globally to integrate AI across all school levels.

3. Updated School Streams for Cycle 3

Two academic pathways were introduced for Cycle 3 students. The Advanced Stream supports those aiming for medicine, engineering and science, while the General Stream caters to learners interested in humanities, arts, business, law and social sciences.

4. Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies Framework

A mandatory framework was approved for teaching Arabic language, Islamic education and social studies in kindergartens across private schools, regardless of curriculum type.

5. New Rules for Studying Abroad

The Education, Human Development and Community Development Council introduced updated criteria for students studying abroad. The new rules aim to enhance labour market readiness and ensure scholarship programmes align with national development priorities and strategic economic sectors.

6. New School Age Cut Off Rule

From the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the school admission cut off date will move to 31 December for institutions that begin their academic year in August or September.

7. ADEK Pre Departure Week

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge launched the Pre Departure Week programme to prepare 300 scholarship students for overseas study. The initiative focuses on academic readiness, cultural awareness, wellbeing and practical guidance to help students transition smoothly into international education environments.

8. Changes in Testing and Assessments

Centralised exams at the end of the second semester were removed and replaced with school based summative assessments. Centralised testing remains in place during the first and third semesters to ensure consistent national benchmarking while allowing schools greater flexibility in evaluating student progress.

9. Expansion of Project Based Learning

The Project Based Learning and Assessment system was expanded to include all Cycle 2 students in public and private schools following the Ministry of Education curriculum. The update also strengthened the national assessment framework, increased Arabic instruction time in kindergartens and introduced daily language development hours for Cycle 1 students.

10. Teacher Development Programme Launched

The Mohamed bin Zayed Award for Best Teacher introduced the Executive Educational Excellence Pioneers programme. Developed in partnership with the Emirates College for Advanced Education, the initiative prepares outstanding educators to take on leadership roles and contribute to national education reform.

11. New Government Scholarships

The Mohammed bin Rashid Government Scholarships programme was launched to support advanced academic studies. Its first phase includes scholarships in public policy, economics and artificial intelligence, with a strong focus on developing future government leaders.

12. New University Campus Opens

A new campus of the Mohamed bin Zayed University for Humanities opened in Madinat Zayed in the Al Dhafra region. The campus offers specialised programmes in Islamic studies, social sciences and humanitarian work, reinforcing values of citizenship, tolerance and coexistence while expanding access to higher education.
