by Eddie Rayner

Bright Learners Private School, a bespoke American school located in Al Rashidiya, Dubai, commences the academic year with its newly appointed Principal, Sulaiman Akbar. With over 20 years of experience in education under his belt, Principal Sulaiman is ready to elevate the educational journey at Bright Learners School and bring it to new heights in its second year of operation.

Sulaiman Akbar has extensive experience in education, having earned a Masters degree in Special Education from PACE University in New York City, and his Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Georgia State University. After completing his studies, Akbar began his career in education as a middle school teacher in New York City public schools. Following, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and continued to develop his pedagogy in Atlanta public schools. Taking his career to the next level, Akbar moved to the United Arab Emirates in 2016 with the objective of enhancing education throughout private schools in the city. Sulaiman has since been a key player in the industry, having most recently led a webinar during the pandemic, which brought school leaders together across the globe, including the UAE, China, and the United States, to discuss the future of education and what the impact will be due to the current health climate. With over 20 years of experience under his belt in a variety of schools, Sulaiman Akbar is prepared to take on his new role at Bright Learners Private School.

Principal Sulaiman is dedicated to working at the service of Bright Learners’ community to build upon the structure that was created during the first year of operation

“I am honoured to be joining the Bright Learners community as its new Principal. I believe all students can learn and that no two students will experience that process in the same way. One of my biggest focuses coming into this school year is to ensure that every child’s needs are met in order for them to meet their full potential,” shared Principal Sulaiman Akbar.

Principal Sulaiman is dedicated to working at the service of Bright Learners’ community to build upon the structure that was created during the first year of operation. The newly-appointed Principal believes that learning is an emotional and social experience, and his aim is to bring student-centred learning to the forefront of the curriculum for all learners to benefit from. Akbar believes that high-quality learning should meet the needs of every individual student, customizing their educational experience based on their abilities and potential. Additionally, Principal Sulaiman’s goal is to introduce a Professional Learning Community approach to education that is focused on learning, a culture of collaboration and is results-oriented. Already a Visible Learning school paired with Principal Sulaiman’s new vision, Bright Learners will use its evidence-based teaching and new strategies to provide ample opportunities for its students to master new skills. As Inclusion Champion of Bright Learners, in parallel to his position as Principal, Sulaiman Akbar will be further enforcing an inclusive and supportive environment for students so that all children can learn and excel, including students of determination and gifted learners. Another part of Principal Sulaiman’s vision to enhance the experience at Bright Learners is to not only better engage its students, but also to include parents and the broader community.

Community outreach is a major focus for Principal Sulaiman

Community outreach is a major focus for Principal Sulaiman. He believes that listening to parent and stakeholder ideas, concerns, and desires is key to ensuring that Bright Learners is a staple in the community and that everyone is engaged in the learning process of the children. Due to Covid-19, extracurricular activities had to take a back seat until the pandemic could be better contained, and with the health climate currently under control through enforced protocols, Principal Sulaiman plans for sports and after school activities to resume for the new academic year as he believes physical-activity is not only an important aspect of education but also for each student’s growth.
